How to Make Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom coffee blends medicinal mushroom extracts with regular coffee to produce a smoother, lower-acid drink with claimed cognitive and immune benefits. The mushrooms you cannot taste individually, but they noticeably reduce the jitteriness and acidity that some coffee drinkers want to avoid.

What You Need

01

Coffee Brewer of Choice

Any brewing method works. French press, pour-over, AeroPress, or drip machine. The mushroom extract is added after brewing, not during, so your brewing method is entirely your preference.

02

Dual-Extracted Mushroom Powder

Use dual-extracted (hot water and alcohol extracted) mushroom powder from reputable brands like Four Sigmatic, Real Mushrooms, or Freshcap. Dual extraction ensures the beneficial compounds are bioavailable. Raw mushroom powder is largely indigestible.

03

Large Mug

A 300-350ml mug accommodates the coffee plus any milk or additional liquid. Pre-warm it with hot water for best results.

04

Measuring Spoon and Stirrer

A half-teaspoon measure for consistent dosing. Stir thoroughly as some mushroom powders can clump if added too quickly to hot liquid.

Step-by-Step Method

1

Brew Your Coffee as Normal

Prepare a standard cup of coffee using your preferred method and your preferred beans. Mushroom coffee works best with a medium roast that is not overly acidic. Brew to your usual strength. The mushroom extract will smooth out the flavour profile regardless of method.

2

Measure the Mushroom Extract

Measure 0.5 to 1 gram of dual-extracted mushroom powder. For a focus-oriented morning brew, use lion's mane. For antioxidant support, use chaga. For a calming evening cup, use reishi. You can combine extracts, keeping total dosage under 2g per cup.

3

Add Extract to Hot Coffee

Add the mushroom powder directly to your hot brewed coffee. The powder dissolves best in liquid above 70 degrees Celsius. Stir vigorously for 15-20 seconds to fully dissolve. If clumps remain, the powder may be old or of low quality.

4

Add Milk or Fat Source

Many mushroom compounds are fat-soluble, so adding a splash of whole milk, coconut oil, MCT oil, or butter improves absorption. This step is optional but recommended. A small amount of healthy fat also further smooths the mouthfeel.

5

Taste and Adjust

Taste the finished drink. If it is too earthy, reduce the mushroom dose next time or switch to a milder extract like lion's mane. If you detect no difference from regular coffee, increase the dose to 1g. Add a touch of honey or maple syrup if desired.

Troubleshooting

Earthy or Unpleasant Taste

The coffee has a noticeably earthy, soil-like flavour that is off-putting.

Fix: You are using too much extract or a low-quality powder. Reduce the dose to 0.5g. Switch to lion's mane which is the most flavour-neutral. Ensure you are using dual-extracted powder, not raw mushroom powder which has a much stronger and more unpleasant taste.
Powder Won't Dissolve

Clumps of mushroom powder float on the surface or settle at the bottom of the cup.

Fix: Add the powder to hot coffee, not lukewarm. Stir vigorously or use a milk frother to blend. If the powder consistently clumps, it may be old or improperly stored. Quality dual-extracted powders dissolve cleanly in hot water within seconds.
No Noticeable Effect

After several days of use, you feel no cognitive or physical difference from adding mushroom extract.

Fix: Functional mushroom effects are cumulative, not immediate like caffeine. Most users report noticing benefits after 2-4 weeks of daily use. Ensure your product contains actual fruiting body extract with verified beta-glucan content, not just mycelium on grain which is far less potent.
